SIU IS ASSOCIATED WITH XSEDE

What is XSEDE?

The Extreme Science and Engineering Discovery Environment (XSEDE) is a powerful collection of supercomputers, visualization, storage systems, software, networks, and expert support. XSEDE is funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and led by the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. It supports 16 supercomputers and high-end visualization and data analysis resources across the country. For more information read the XSEDE Flyer.

XSEDE Resources

The XSEDE is composed of multiple partner institutions including Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC) at the University of Texas, Austin, San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) at the University of California, San Diego, Center for Computation and Technology (CCT) at the Louisiana State University, Keeneland Project at Georgia Institute of Technology, National Institute for Computational Sciences (NICS), at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center (PSC) at the Carnegie Mellon University and University of Pittsburgh, Mason Cluster at the Indiana University, and the University of Southern California. Each of these service providers contributes one or more allocatable services, that include the High Performance Computing (HPC) machines, the High Throughput Computing (HTC) machines, visualization, data storage and testbed. NCSA is the home to the XSEDE Operations Center, that provides a 24/7/365 help desk. More information can be find at XSEDE Resources.

XSEDE Campus Champion

The Campus Champions is a program to introduce a local source of knowledge about XSEDE services. Through this program each participating campus will have direct access to XSEDE, input to its staff, resource allocations for the use of researchers, and assistance in using those resources. Campus Champion may engage in a number of the following activities:

  • Providing information on XSEDE and cyberinfrastructure resources to researchers and educators
  • Assisting campus users to quickly get start-up allocations of computing time on XSEDE systems
  • Be an ombudsperson, on behalf of the campus users of XSEDE, to capture information on problems and challenges that need to be addressed by XSEDE
  • Host training workshops for users and awareness sessions for campus personnel about XSEDE resources and services
  • Provide local users with contacts within XSEDE for quick problem resolution
  • Participate in XSEDE information sharing sessions, and attend the annual XSEDE Conference
