Juniper VPN Setup for Linux

This tutorial is written for Ubuntu 9.10 but setup method is similar for other versions and distributions.

  1. Install Java and the Java add-on (If this is already installed, proceed to step 2).

    • Open a terminal and enter the following commands:
      • sudo -i
      • apt-get update
      • apt-get install sun-java6-jre sun-java6-plugin sun-java6-fonts
      • cd /usr/lib/firefox-addons/extensions
      • jar -xvf `find /usr/lib/jvm -name ffjcext.zip`
      • exit
      • restart Firefox (normally not required: enable Java)
  2. Open Firefox and go to "vpn.siu.edu"
  3. Allow Firefox to run the Java application and allow the setup control application when the dialog boxes appear.
  4. Sign in to the VPN login page with your SIU Network ID and password.
  5. Once signed in, click the "Start" button under the Client Application Sessions section.
  6. When the terminal window appears, enter the root password (To create a root password, open a terminal and enter "sudo passwd root")
  7. A Network Connect box should appear and this box must remain open in order to browse the internet.
