What is Office 365?
Office 365 is a cloud-based service which includes a number of online services, including Outlook Web App, Office Web (Word, Excel, PowerPoint etc.), SharePoint Online, and Lync Online.
How do I access Office 365?
If you use Outlook Web App, after you move to Office 365, you'll be using a new URL: http://office.siu.edu. You will be redirected to the SIU Single Sign On screen. Enter your SIU e-mail address and password.
Does Office 365 work for those of us at off-campus locations?
Office 365 is cloud-based and can be accessed anywhere.
Does Office 365 work with iPhones and Android phones that are currently using Exchange?
How well does Office 365 work with Mac and Linux?
It works great. Since it is cloud based, any operating system with a mainstream browser will work with O365. Mac can utilize Outlook or other Exchange capable programs to Sync directly to office 365.
Are other features of Office 365 beyond email and calendar available, such as SharePoint, Lync Online (IM and video), and applications like Word and Excel?
Yes, these will be available for use. Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and OneNote are all available for use and all files can be saved to onedrive cloud service. Also, if you want to edit directly on your desktop, there is an option that will open it for you.
Are site licenses still available for Microsoft Office so that I can install it on my computer instead of using the cloud version?
Due to our Microsoft agreement, you may install up to 5 copies of Office on PC/Mac. Please visit http://portal.office.com and sign in with your SIU e-mail address and password.
What is the biggest message that can be sent or received using Office 365?
Up to 150 MB (as of April, 2015). Prior to this it was 25MB.
What is my mailbox quota?
All Office 365 accounts have an email quota of 50GB, up from 25GB in 2014.
Is POP or IMAP supported?
What email clients are supported?
Office 365 is web based so no desktop client is needed. You access it through a mainstream browser like Internet Explorer, FireFox or Chrome. However, if you wish to use a desktop client, most clients that support exchange will work. Microsoft Outlook is the supported and recommended client for SIU.
Is there any documentation for this system?
Besides these documents that you are reading, Microsoft has provided online documentation. If something is missing here you would like to see added, please e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org.
Where can I store my documents in Office 365?
A component of Office 365 called OneDrive allows you to store and manage your documents in the cloud. Once you have logged into O365, you will notice a blue menu at the top. Click on the word “OneDrive ” to view and manage its contents. Clicking on “+ new document” will present you with a menu of Office 365 file types that can be created. Saving is automatic, so when you are done, just close your document. Your documents are available to you from anywhere that you have an internet connection and a web browser.
How much storage do I get?
Microsoft allows up to 1 TB of free OneDrive storage. In other words, you'll be able to save millions of single spaced pages of typed text!
How can I manage my documents in OneDrive?
When viewing your files, click on the Files tab in the upper left. You will see the options available to you. Generally, click on the file you want to manage then on the option in the ribbon at the top of the window (Delete Document for example). You can also create folders for management of larger numbers of files. Just click on “New Folder” near the beginning of the ribbon and give it a name. Files can then be placed in the folder by clicking and dragging their icon into the folder. Files can be renamed by selecting them and clicking on “Edit Properties”.
Can I edit my existing files?
Yes, you can both upload your files to OneDrive or download them to your USB or other local drives. The files are compatible with older versions of Office (2007, 2010 and 2013).
