RezNet refers to the residence hall network all students living in Thompson Point, Brush Towers, University Hall, and Wall and Grand Apartments use to access the Internet from their rooms. In order to gain access to this network, SIU IT has several requirements all computers must pass. The following is a checklist of those requirements for incoming students to refer to before bringing their computer to the RezNet Move-In Weekend.

  • Ensure your latest updates are installed for critical programs like Java, Adobe products and Windows
  • Turn the "Automatic Updates" feature in Windows ON
  • Enable Windows Firewall
  • Install antivirus software
  • Uninstall any and all peer-to-peer clients
    • This includes Limewire, Frostwire, UTorrent, etc.
  • Run a virus scan prior to bringing your computer to the RezNet Move-In Weekend to drastically cut down on the amount of time SIU IT will spend working on your computer
  • Purchase a wired switch and Ethernet cable
    • SIU IT will be selling wired switches and Ethernet cables at the RezNet Move-InWeekend
    • Wireless routers are NOT available in the residence halls for security reasons
  • Make sure you know your SIU Dawg Tag, SIU PIN number, and Social Security Number
    • Necessary for creating your Network ID

Additional Notes

  • The normal RezNet access fee is no longer charged during the signup process. Instead, this fee has been assimilated into each student's total housing fee
  • It is unnecessary to purchase additional antivirus software. Because SIU has a license with McAfee, we provide their VirusScan Enterprise solution free of charge. This product also comes with a lifetime license for all SIU students
  • It is recommended to not use computers with Celeron processors, due to the multitude of complaints from students in the past
  • It is also not recommended to purchase Netgear Network Anywhere brand switches. Found at Wal-Mart, although extremely cheap, SIU IT has received so many complaints about this product in the past that it is heavily discouraged to use one. Purchase at your own risk.
