Our Services
The Network Engineering Team's mission is to provide a stable, reliable and robust data network communications infrastructure to the SIU students, faculty, staff in support of the academic and administrative functions of the University. Below is a list of services we provide.

Southern Illinois University – Information Technology owns the following IP space:
- IP version-4 131.230.0.0/16
- IP version-6 2620:4E:8000::/48
The IPv6 space is not yet deployed on campus.
IP addresses and subnets are assigned by this department. All IP address requests and changes must be registered with us. Adherence to the preceding conditions helps to avoid IP address conflicts and other connectivity problems for campus users.
IP and subnet requests are accepted from the LAN admin or IT Technical contact for a specific department.
Submit an IP Address or Subnet Request
When submitting a request, please include the following details:
- Name of the end user or service requesting the IP/Subnet
- Name of the LAN Admin or IT Technical contact for the department
- Name of Department on Campus
- Phone Number
- Type of Request: IP/Subnet
- Hostname preference
- Description of service
- VLAN or Subnet information if available
Network Engineering manages the Domain Name System for Southern Illinois University. DNS converts textual names such as "siu.edu" into IP addresses and vice versa.
Below is the list of DNS servers to be used on the SIU campus:
- 131.230.2.50
- 131.230.9.112
- 131.230.2.1
- 131.230.252.1
- 131.230.24.1
Network Engineering maintains the DNS records. All requests, and changes must be registered with Network-Engineering. Adherence to the preceding conditions helps to avoid conflicts and other connectivity problems for campus users.

Submit an IP Address or Subnet Request
When submitting a request, please include the following details:
- Name of the end use or service requesting
- Name of the LAN Admin or IT Technical contact for Department
- Name of Department on Campus
- Phone Number
- Type of Request: DNS
- Hostname preference
- Description of service
- VLAN or Subnet information if available
Network Engineering manages the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol service for Southern Illinois University. DHCP is used by computers on campus for requesting Internet Protocol parameters, such as an IP address and list of DNS servers.
Departments across campus are encouraged to use the Information Technology managed DHCP servers. Adherence to the preceding conditions helps to avoid conflicts and other connectivity problems for campus users.

Southern Illinois University's wireless network provides secure, mobile Internet access for students, faculty, and staff from the wireless access points located throughout the main campus. Guest Wireless access is also available for the visitors on campus.
Wireless Networks:
The following networks are present where wireless access is available.
- "eduroam" – eduroam (education roaming) is the secure, world-wide roaming access service developed for the international research and education community. Eduroam allows students, researchers and staff from participating institutions to obtain Internet connectivity when visiting other participating institutions. You can find out more about the eduroam project by visiting their web page at https://www.eduroam.org.
- “eduroam-Instructions” - Open and unsecured network that provides instructions on how to connect to secure “eduroam” wireless network.
- “SIU-Guest” – Wireless network for campus visitors
Students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to use the “eduroam” secure wireless network to access the Internet and campus resources. Click here to configure the network. Students in residence halls should use the Resident Hall option.

Virtual Private Network (VPN) provides access to the Campus Area Network from remote locations over the Internet. This allows resources that are normally only accessible on campus to be reached from almost anywhere there is an Internet connection.
VPN service is available to the faculty and staff for University business needs. In some cases, VPN is approved for SIU students with an academic need.
