Keeping your device secure

Antivirus
While Macs were once considered safe from viruses, that is no longer the case. Protect your device by installing Sophos for Mac, a free antivirus solution available for OS X.

Software Updates
Regularly updating your software is crucial for both performance and security. Always install the latest updates for your operating system and applications.

Secure OS X Accounts

  • Rename the Administrator account to reduce the risk of targeted attacks on default account names.
  • Consider creating a decoy Administrator account with no privileges to further deter unauthorized access.

Disable Auto Login
Enable the login screen at startup to ensure only authorized users can access your device. This setting is found in System Preferences.

Strong Passwords
Use passwords with at least 16 characters that include special characters. Avoid easily guessed information like names or birthdates.

Download Cautiously 

  • Only download files from trusted sources.

  • If you receive an unexpected file—even from someone you know—verify its legitimacy before downloading.

  • Avoid software downloads from unknown or unverified websites.

  • Watch for unwanted add-ons or changes to your system settings during installation.

  • Disable or remove any suspicious or unnecessary apps.

  • Use browser extensions like Web of Trust (WOT) to help identify and avoid malicious websites.

Secure Links

  • Type URL’s directly or use bookmarks rather than clicking on links in emails or messages.
  • Hover over links before clicking to preview the destination URL (usually displayed in the bottom corner of your browser).
  • Only enter sensitive information on websites with a padlock icon in the address bar—this indicates a secure connection.

Secure Browsers
Use secure browsers like Mozilla FireFox and Google Chrome as alternatives to Safari for enhanced protection and regular security updates.

Encrypt Your Files
Add an extra layer of protection by encrypting sensitive files or your entire hard drive. Tools like Entrust, digital signatures, or built-in encryption features in Microsoft Office can help safeguard your data.
