Protect Your Mobile Device
Mobile devices have become prime targets for cybercriminals. Once considered relatively secure, they are now just as vulnerable as other devices—and potentially even more at risk because they’re used more frequently and often contain a wealth of personal and sensitive information. In addition to being susceptible to attacks through email and social media, smartphones are easily lost or stolen, putting your data at risk of exposure.
Tips for Keeping Your Mobile Device Secure:
-
Use secure screen access: Set a strong passcode, pattern, fingerprint, or facial recognition to lock your device.
-
Avoid storing confidential data: Never save sensitive information such as PINs, passwords, or credit card numbers on your phone.
-
Delete sensitive emails: Remove messages that contain confidential or personal information.
-
Beware of GPS tracking: Understand what location data your apps and device are collecting and sharing.
-
Watch out for fake apps: Only download apps from trusted sources. Read reviews and permissions carefully before installing.
-
Use Wi-Fi cautiously: Avoid connecting to unsecured or unadvertised networks. Many mobile apps don’t encrypt passwords, making them visible on open networks.
-
Disable Bluetooth when not in use: Bluetooth can be used to gain unauthorized access if left on.
-
Never leave your phone unattended: Always keep your device in a secure location.
-
Enable “Find My Phone”: This feature can help locate your phone if it's lost or stolen and assist law enforcement in recovery.
-
Wipe your phone before disposal: Erase all data before selling, recycling, or discarding your device.
-
Report lost or stolen phones immediately: Contact the Department of Public Safety or Carbondale Police as soon as possible.
